The Kenyan University Culture: Part Two

Students at Moi University outside the Administration Block demanding security of rights
Security

Security can be brought out in different aspects. The more secure an institution is student will instill discipline. It is difficult for students to start looting when they are aware of the security to be tight.

Security in universities like Kenyatta University has advanced day in day out in that monitoring at the gate once you are to the vicinity is a must. This has become a trend in most universities whereas some like Moi University, main campus, are retrograding in that security check is done thoroughly when one gets out of the varsity instead of when checking in.

Identity cards are issued to each student for identification at any security check. But, to the surprise of many, it is mainly important during examination period than any other time.

Security of accommodation is yet another aspect that threatens the lives of the undergraduates. This is because of admitting a large number of students to a university with inadequate facilities to accommodate them. This gives a reason to why some students will end up living in the rental houses which may be far away from the school hence posing endanger to them when coming back from the school libraries to their residences.

Moreover, we have heard of cases where students come up with great ideas but lack a platform and support to launch them. Kenyatta University as one of the best campuses started a programme called Chandaria Business Innovation and Incubation Centre to support students' innovation and growth of ideas.

Other universities are coming up with programmes to protect their students' novelty. Due to this culture of securing the ideas and innovations, a trend is cultivated to identify universities as best institutions where every successful learner should be.

Hooliganism
Campuses have turned out to be the training grounds for hooliganism.   A number of cases of robbery mainly originate from them. Every year we hear of incidences of university students involved in robberies where most times some end up killed by gunshots.

These very goons are always paid to destroy belonging, murder some individuals and cause chaos in and out of the institutions by prominent people. It has now become to a job for some students to indulge themselves in the goon groups so as to earn.

It will not exceed a week before you hear of murder, robbery, strike among other cases in our campuses. It has become a culture embraced by students who get into hooliganism and introduce others to it.

Religion

Every student in an institution is identified in terms of their religious beliefs and denominations. The mention of the Catholic University of East Africa gives an individual an idea that the Christianity denomination that identifies the university is Catholicism.

This mean we expect the values of the Catholic Church being instilled. Similarly, Baraton University of East and Central Africa which is well-known to be an Adventist university creates an environment for learning which directly and indirectly impacting Adventist beliefs to their scholars.

Through the doctrines encouraged, they influence the character and behaviour of the students in terms of dressing, feeding, communication, worship among others. On the other hand, some universities such as the University of Nairobi accommodate all kinds of religious denominations.

Entertainment
All work without play makes Jack a dull boy. Correspondingly, all day study makes a student a zombie. Entertainment is part and parcel of every campus. It brings different cultures together. It promotes interaction and creates a good relationship between the undergraduates involved.

For example, during fashion events different dressing codes of depicts the overall dress culture of the university. Students from different campuses depending on the placement and environment have different tastes of music.

Universities near an urban set up will rather have performing artists for their events which are contrary to the ones that are far away from the towns. Besides, different campuses hold their functions dissimilarly. These trends in entertainment bring out a range of customs from one campus to the other hence uniqueness.

Business

The best way to keep up in a university as a student can be either through self-employment or employment into a firm. Business is a day to day activity. It is the duty of scholars to make the surrounding of their varsity conducive for them to live.

Some will involve themselves in business opportunities so as to ensure a continuous flow of goods and services since there's a readily available market. This has greatly promoted the growth of the individuals and the economy and diversity in production.

For example, a scholar can be pursuing a course dealing with teaching and at the same time get involved in a business activity hence diversity in production.

In conclusion, the culture of a campus can never be created in a day with few individuals. It needs time, instillation of doctrines, norms, beliefs and customs and involve different individuals from diverse backgrounds.

In addition to that, culture is supposed to be dynamic and monitored to ensure a peaceful co-existence and a necessary existence
